THE SOLAR FARM PLANTED WILDFLOWERS. THE BEES NOTICED.

A five-year study followed two utility-scale solar sites in Minnesota where native grasses and flowering plants were established as solar-pollinator habitat. From 2018 through 2022, every measured habitat and biodiversity metric increased over time, including flowering plant richness, insect-group diversity, total insect abundance and native bee abundance. Bees from habitat-adjacent areas also visited nearby soybean flowers.

WHAT HAPPENED

Researchers monitored two Minnesota solar sites for five years after grasses and forbs were established beneath and around the arrays as managed pollinator habitat. Across 2018–2022, flowering plant richness rose, insect groups became more diverse, total insect abundance increased and native bees showed the clearest increase over time.\n\nThe team also watched soybean fields beside the habitat. Bees visited flowers near the solar-pollinator plantings more often than soybean interiors or roadsides, at levels comparable to fields beside Conservation Reserve Program grassland. The important caveat is the intervention: planted and managed habitat made room for the insects. Solar panels by themselves are not the cause, and two sites in Minnesota do not stand in for every solar farm.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Infrastructure does not have to be single-purpose. With deliberate planting and patient management, the unused space around energy equipment became habitat — and the bees noticed.
