An Australian freight operator bought the country's first solar-electric refrigerated trailer unit.

On October 20, Queensland-based Wickham Freight Lines became the first Australian business to purchase a Sunswap Endurance battery-electric, solar-assisted trailer refrigeration unit.

WHAT HAPPENED

Refrigerated trailers usually run a separate diesel engine to keep food and medicines cold, even when the truck itself is electric. Endurance replaces that refrigeration engine with batteries and roof-mounted solar panels while remaining independent of the prime mover. Wickham committed to the technology after a 1,671-kilometre Sydney–Brisbane return test. The trial itself happened earlier in 2026; the new October development is the commercial purchase. Public sources disagree on whether 62% or 67% of the battery remained, so the article does not treat that figure as settled.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Freight decarbonization does not always require replacing an entire truck. This purchase targets one persistent diesel engine attached to the trailer and puts a narrower technology into ordinary commercial use. It is one customer, not proof of fleet-wide economics, but it is a real adoption milestone after a real route test.
