THE DAMS CAME DOWN. MORE THAN 20,000 SALMON CAME BACK.

Four dams gone. 21,052 adult Chinook counted upstream across two seasons. Eighty-eight percent of their documented historic range reoccupied — early, and encouraging.

Four hydroelectric dams came off the Klamath River in 2024, reopening more than 640 kilometres of habitat that salmon had been locked out of for generations. A peer-reviewed study in Scientific Reports, published Aug. 27, 2026, counted what happened next: 7,742 adult Chinook migrating upstream in 2024 and 13,310 in 2025 — 21,052 fish across two seasons.

WHAT HAPPENED

The dam removals were the end of decades of advocacy by Klamath Basin Tribes, alongside restoration crews, agencies and scientists who spent years arguing that a river held back by concrete would keep failing its fish. Once the dams were gone, researchers tracked how far and how fast Chinook moved. By their analysis, the fish reoccupied 88% of their documented historical distribution, including 345 kilometres of newly reopened habitat and reaches as high as about 1,250 metres in elevation. The authors are careful about what that does and does not mean: these are early recolonization indicators, not proof of complete ecosystem recovery. Whether spawning holds up over successive generations, and how the wider river system responds, still needs years of monitoring.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Nobody had to invent anything. People removed the obstruction, and a species that had been waiting upstream of it for a century went back to work. It is the rare environmental story where the fix was subtraction — and where the credit belongs to the Tribes and restoration workers who spent decades making the case, not to the fish.
