NORWAY CREATED ITS LARGEST MARINE PROTECTED AREA.

Norway has created its largest marine protected area in Andfjorden, spanning 1,848.5 square kilometres and bringing cold-water coral reefs, kelp forests and important marine habitat under a dedicated protection framework.

WHAT HAPPENED

The protected area stretches across municipalities in Troms and Nordland. Norway says it will be managed through a dedicated board that includes Sámi representation, with rules designed to conserve distinctive seabed and coastal ecosystems while allowing carefully regulated use.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Ocean protection can sound like a percentage on a dashboard. Andfjorden is the physical version: a named, mapped place large enough to hold coral forests, kelp, fish and whales — with a management structure meant to keep those relationships intact.
