Book Bunk and Nairobi City County have restored Eastlands and Kaloleni public libraries as free civic hubs. Book Bunk reports more than 181,898 users affected by its library interventions, over 39,259 community-program participants and patronage up more than 240%.
WHAT HAPPENED
Since partnering with Nairobi City County in 2018, Book Bunk has restored two public libraries and expanded them beyond books into study, arts, skills and community programming. A Sep 25 Reasons to Be Cheerful report describes heavy current use and documents the broader community-hub model.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
A pair of spaces people once avoided became places people compete to get seats in. The measurable part is not the paint job: usage climbed dramatically once the libraries became useful again.
