RHODE ISLAND WILL PAIR SOLAR CARPORTS, BATTERIES AND EV CHARGING ON ONE CIVIC CAMPUS.
A government parking lot is becoming a small, flexible power system.

Rhode Island plans two integrated solar-carport installations on its Capitol Hill campus, combining generation, batteries and vehicle charging in public parking areas.
WHAT HAPPENED
A $4.5 million federal earmark is being matched with state Office of Energy Resources funding. The systems are planned for lots behind the Department of Administration and beside the Department of Health. Together with existing rooftop panels, they are expected to bring campus solar capacity to about one megawatt. Construction is scheduled to begin near the end of the first quarter of 2027 and the systems must be operating by late 2027 to secure federal credits.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
This is practical civic infrastructure doing several jobs at once: producing electricity, storing it, charging vehicles and shading parked cars. Using a public campus as a visible demonstration can help normalize integrated clean-energy design. It remains a funded plan until construction and performance are verified.
