GREATER ONE-HORNED RHINOS JUST HIT AN ESTIMATED 4,075.

The latest global estimate puts greater one-horned rhinos at 4,075 — another step upward for one of conservation’s longest recoveries.

WHAT HAPPENED

The International Rhino Foundation’s 2026 report estimates 4,075 greater one-horned rhinos, compared with 4,014 in 2022. The species now survives mainly in India and Nepal, where protection, habitat work and translocations have rebuilt numbers from fewer than 200 at the start of the 20th century.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Wildlife recovery usually arrives as a long decimal, not a miracle. This one has taken decades of protected habitat, anti-poaching work and reintroductions — and the curve is still moving the right way.
