TWO OF THE WORLD’S RAREST RHINOS ARE PREGNANT.

TWO OF THE WORLD’S RAREST RHINOS ARE PREGNANT.

Ratu and Delilah — two female Sumatran rhinos living at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park — are pregnant. Both calves are expected in May 2027. With fewer than 50 Sumatran rhinos remaining in the wild, each carefully monitored pregnancy matters.

WHAT HAPPENED

Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry and Yayasan Badak Indonesia announced the pregnancies on October 3. Ratu is expecting her fourth calf with Andalas. Delilah is expecting her second calf with Harapan. The sanctuary is home to 10 rhinos and has reached capacity; its veterinary teams will monitor both mothers and pregnancies closely.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

This is hope with its feet still on the ground. A pregnancy is not a birth, and conservation breeding alone cannot solve habitat fragmentation. But two simultaneous pregnancies — built on decades of Indonesian-led veterinary work, habitat care and patient breeding — give one of Earth's rarest mammals more room to continue.
