Seventeen months after his rescue, Cullen the manatee swam home.

Cullen was a dependent calf when rescuers found him beside his boat-struck mother in the Florida Keys on May 10, 2025. His mother died, but Cullen survived. Seventeen months of rehabilitation later, he was healthy enough to return to the wild.

WHAT HAPPENED

Cullen first received care at SeaWorld Orlando and then moved to Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Dolphin Research Center says veterinary and rehabilitation teams from those institutions, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and Zoo Miami coordinated his recovery and release. On October 20, 2026, they returned him to the water at Tavernier. The release closes the rehabilitation chapter; post-release life in the wild is the next test.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Cullen's story is not a neat undoing of the boat strike that killed his mother. It is a second chance assembled across institutions, tanks, transport and months of patient care. One orphaned calf made it from emergency rescue back to the same waters where his life began.
