A new public platform uses satellite data and AI to monitor about four million Arctic lakes in near real time as a signal of permafrost change.
WHAT HAPPENED
The Alfred Wegener Institute says the Lost Lakes platform displays near-real-time data for around four million Arctic lakes and shows changes since 2016. Sudden lake drainage can reveal destabilized permafrost, and the dashboard gives local communities and scientists a faster way to see where the landscape is changing.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
Because climate adaptation gets much more useful when warnings arrive while the change is happening instead of years later in a paper. This turns a slow scientific blind spot into something communities can actually watch.
