GERMANY WROTE DOWN HOW IT WILL QUIT FOSSIL FUELS. DEADLINE: 2045.
Europe's largest economy published a sector-by-sector plan to leave coal, oil and gas behind, only the third country to do so.
Germany's cabinet-approved roadmap sets out how the country will transition away from fossil fuels no later than 2045.
WHAT HAPPENED
Environment Minister Carsten Schneider presented the plan at the UN General Assembly on Sep 23. It focuses on electrifying transport, heating and industry, targets at least 80% renewable electricity by 2030, and keeps coal plants closing by 2038 at the latest. Fossil fuels were 65% of Germany's energy use in 2024.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
Nearly 200 countries promised in 2023 to transition away from fossil fuels. Very few have written down how. Now a major industrial economy has, and dared others to follow.
