The clean-power buildout turned into an energy-security shield when global gas prices spiked.

WIND AND SOLAR SAVED THE UK £5.9 BILLION IN GAS IMPORTS.

Britain’s wind and solar expansion did more than cut emissions: during a gas-price shock, it sharply reduced how much fuel the country needed to import.

WHAT HAPPENED

Carbon Brief calculated that wind and solar generation rose 14% year over year in 2026 to date while gas-fired power fell nearly 10%. The two renewables supplied a record 41% of UK electricity, compared with 25% from gas. The avoided gas use was estimated at £5.9bn, equivalent to about 100 liquefied-natural-gas cargoes.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Climate infrastructure can sound abstract until the bill arrives. Here, turbines and panels quietly converted years of construction into fewer imported cargoes and billions kept out of a volatile fuel market.
