In the TESEO trial, 450 adults received different benznidazole regimens. The 30-day, once-daily option matched the standard 60-day course in the trial and caused fewer side effects.
A randomized trial in Bolivia found that a 30-day benznidazole regimen was as effective in the study as the standard 60-day course and produced fewer side effects.
WHAT HAPPENED
UTEP reported on 22 September 2026 that the TESEO phase 2b randomized trial enrolled 450 adults at three centers in Bolivia. Benznidazole at 150 milligrams once daily for 30 days was as effective in the trial as the standard 150 milligrams twice daily for 60 days, with fewer side effects. The results, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, used three years of PCR follow-up. More than 7 million people are estimated to live with Chagas disease worldwide.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
Cutting a difficult treatment in half is not cinematic. It is better: fewer days for side effects to accumulate, fewer chances for a course to be abandoned, and a result sturdy enough to justify the next step. The trial does not rewrite every guideline today, but it makes a shorter route credible.
