AFTER A 99.5% CRASH, THE BOGONG MOTHS ARE SWARMING AGAIN.

Large bogong-moth swarms are crossing New South Wales again, giving researchers cautious hope after the endangered species’ near-collapse.

WHAT HAPPENED

Residents across New South Wales reported homes, streets and skies full of migrating bogong moths. About 800 observations were logged on iNaturalist from Friday through Monday, with more than 200 in one 24-hour stretch. Researchers say rainfall, a warm winter and northerly winds may have helped the movement.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

A migration that once numbered in the billions nearly disappeared. Seeing moths arrive in conspicuous swarms again is not proof of recovery, but it is a living, fluttering reason to keep watching.
