Phoenix Zoo produced 34 endangered black-footed ferret kits in seven litters, its strongest breeding season for the species in 27 years.
WHAT HAPPENED
The Phoenix Zoo reported 34 kits born in seven litters during summer 2026. The zoo is one of five facilities in the world breeding black-footed ferrets for release, and most of the 2026 kits are expected to enter the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recovery pipeline where they learn to hunt before potential release.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
Because captive breeding is doing exactly what it is supposed to do: creating animals that can reinforce a species in the wild, at a scale this zoo has not achieved since 1999.
