653 FROGS JUST GOT THEIR MOUNTAINS BACK
653 endangered frogs raised by the L.A. Zoo were released into their native mountain streams in Southern California.
WHAT HAPPENED
On August 19 and August 27, teams from the Los Angeles Zoo, Aquarium of the Pacific and U.S. Geological Survey released 338 and 315 southern mountain yellow-legged frogs into streams in the San Gabriel Mountains. The 653 frogs were bred at the L.A. Zoo, and the releases bring the recovery program total to nearly 7,000 zoo-bred frogs returned to the wild.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
Because species recovery is usually measured in tiny increments, and this one came hopping back by the hundreds. It is a concrete conservation outcome: animals bred for recovery are back where they belong.
