Custom boats and boarding systems are making independent sailing possible for people whose mobility used to keep them off the water.
WHAT HAPPENED
Programs such as Monte Real Yacht Club’s Adapted Sailing School in Spain use specialized boats and boarding equipment so sailors with reduced mobility can learn and sail. In the U.K., the Disabled Sailors Association says it has helped more than 25,000 people with disabilities get onto the water.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
The hopeful part is not that disabled people are inspiring. It is that somebody redesigned the equipment and removed a barrier that never needed to be there.
