THE WALLABY CLOCKED BACK IN AFTER 50 YEARS.
Conservationists confirmed endangered nabarleks at two mainland sites on Dambeemangaddee Country — the first detections there in more than 50 years. Turns out the tiny wallaby had not entirely left the building.

The nabarlek, a very small rock-wallaby, had not been recorded on this stretch of mainland Kimberley country for over half a century. Survey work has now confirmed it at two separate sites.
WHAT HAPPENED
Working on Dambeemangaddee Country in Western Australia's Kimberley, conservationists confirmed the presence of endangered nabarleks at two mainland locations — the first confirmed detections in the area in more than 50 years.
The species had been assumed to be holding on mainly in offshore island refuges, so mainland detections change the picture of where the animal still persists.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
A 50-year gap in the record is usually the beginning of a much sadder story. This time the animal was simply somewhere nobody had looked hard enough, recently enough, with the right cameras.
Not every recovery is a comeback. Some are just proof that something never fully left.
