$65 MILLION IS TURNING 34 FARM-CONSERVATION IDEAS INTO FIELD TESTS.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is funding 16 on-farm trials and 18 classic innovation projects, with producer payments designed to offset the risk of trying new conservation approaches.

WHAT HAPPENED

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service awarded up to $50 million to 16 On-Farm Trials and up to $15 million to 18 CIG Classic projects. One Idaho project will test virtual fencing that uses local radio beacons instead of GPS for smaller livestock operations. An Illinois project will combine field experiments, sensors and weather data into a decision tool intended to improve nitrogen timing, profitability and soil health.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Conservation technology becomes useful only when producers can test it under real conditions without absorbing every risk themselves. These grants finance that bridge from idea to field evidence. The awards are inputs, not proof of environmental outcomes yet; results must still show what scales.
