The HALO Trust announced it has concluded its humanitarian landmine clearance programme in Kosovo after 27 years of work that began days after the 1999 war ended.
WHAT HAPPENED
During the 1998-99 conflict more than 800,000 people were displaced. When they returned, they found minefields and unexploded cluster bombs; HALO reports around 150 people were killed or injured by mines in the first month alone. HALO teams entered with the first humanitarian convoy in June 1999 and kept clearing for 27 years. This week the charity marked the end of that work, and its Kosovar staff now help lead operations in Syria and Ukraine.
