CHIRICAHUA JUST BECAME AMERICA'S NEWEST NATIONAL PARK.
A new name for a landscape protected since 1924.

The Chiricahua National Park Act, signed October 20, redesignated the century-old national monument in southeastern Arizona as the country's newest national park.
WHAT HAPPENED
The approximately 12,000-acre park protects rhyolite rock spires and balanced rocks formed by an ancient eruption, a sky-island meeting of desert, grassland and forest ecosystems, and cultural history including its importance as Chiricahua Apache homeland.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
The protection is not new, but the national-park title can widen public attention and stewardship for a singular landscape whose ecological and human history deserve to be better known.
