CALIFORNIA’S WOLVES JUST HAD A RECORD 42 PUPS.

Eight packs raised pups in 2026, extending one of California’s wildest comeback stories.

CALIFORNIA’S WOLVES JUST HAD A RECORD 42 PUPS.

California’s gray wolves produced at least 42 pups across eight packs in 2026, setting a new state record fifteen years after the species began rebuilding a foothold on its own.

WHAT HAPPENED

California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s gray-wolf coordinator told SFGATE that at least 42 pups were documented in 2026, up from 32 in 2025 and 35 in 2024. All eight packs known to have bred raised pups. The animals descend from wolves that dispersed into California naturally beginning in 2011; they were not reintroduced by the state.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

The comeback is messy, real and still unfinished. Livestock conflicts require serious coexistence work, and newborn pups are not the same as adults that survive. But a native predator returning under its own power — and raising a record generation — is earned hope with a howl.
