A brown bear called Backpack packed on enough Alaska to win the internet’s favorite wildlife election.
Katmai’s annual bracket crowned Bear 89 “Backpack,” celebrating the visible success of bears preparing for winter on the Brooks River.
WHAT HAPPENED
Online voters selected Backpack over Bear 910 in the Sept. 29 final. Backpack is the son of 2019 champion Holly and has used the Brooks River since he was a cub. Fat Bear Week uses before-and-after images to celebrate the body mass brown bears need to survive hibernation.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
There is no crisis to solve here. A bear ate salmon until strangers across the world elected him enormous. Weird joy remains a renewable resource.
