$18 MILLION WILL HELP RANCHERS KEEP GREAT PLAINS GRASSLAND INTACT.
The fund starts with $9 million from Walmart Foundation and $9 million in aligned investment from McDonald’s USA and suppliers.

The Great Plains Grassland Fund is designed to pay for both permanent protection and better day-to-day management, while keeping working ranches economically viable.
WHAT HAPPENED
NFWF says the fund begins with a $9 million Walmart Foundation grant plus $9 million in aligned investment from McDonald’s USA and key suppliers. Its goals are to help permanently protect 150,000–200,000 acres and improve management across another 150,000–200,000 acres through voluntary easements, technical assistance and financial support. An initial request for proposals makes up to $10 million available for projects, with awards anticipated in 2027.
WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP
About two million acres of Great Plains grassland are converted each year. This fund treats ranchers as partners in keeping what remains intact—aligning wildlife habitat, carbon-rich soils and rural livelihoods instead of pretending they must compete.
