VACCINES PREVENTED 2.2 MILLION FUTURE DEATHS IN ONE YEAR.

The future changed 2.2 million times.

In 2025, countries immunised more than 73 million children with Gavi support—more than in any previous year. The Vaccine Alliance's modelling estimates those vaccinations prevented more than 2.2 million future deaths, the largest one-year impact in its history. The same annual report says Gavi-supported countries raised DTP3 coverage to 82%, delivered 44.6 million malaria vaccine doses across 24 African countries, and fully immunised more than 35 million girls against HPV during the year. This is progress measured in futures that no longer end early. It also reflects growing country ownership: supported countries contributed a record $301 million toward vaccine costs, while 56 vaccine programmes were fully self-financed.

WHAT HAPPENED

Gavi published its 2025 Annual Progress Report on October 7, 2026. The report says vaccination supported by the Alliance averted an estimated 2.2 million future deaths in 2025, taking the cumulative estimate above 23 million since 2000.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

The best public-health success stories are often invisible: the outbreak that never spreads, the cancer that never develops, the child who simply grows up. Here, that invisible counterfactual becomes legible at extraordinary scale.
