At Colorado’s Aspen Backcountry Marathon, Brier Youngfleish crossed the finish line first overall — not just first among women. Then two more women finished behind her, creating an all-women overall podium.
WHAT HAPPENED
The Aspen Backcountry Marathon is a full 26.2-mile mountain race through Colorado terrain, not a women-only competition or separate elite heat.
Youngfleish finished in 4 hours, 8 minutes and 16 seconds. According to race coverage, she did not even realize she was leading the entire event when she crossed the finish line.
The surprise did not end there.
Second place overall went to another woman. So did third.
That made the race’s overall podium — first, second and third regardless of gender — entirely female.
There are plenty of complicated conversations about performance, participation and representation in sports.
This particular result requires very little analysis.
Three women finished before everybody else.
