TEENAGERS ARE UNPLASTIFYING 400+ SCHOOLS.

A school challenge has engaged 3,500+ young people in 23 countries to redesign everyday plastic use.

TEENAGERS ARE UNPLASTIFYING 400+ SCHOOLS.

The Unplastify Schools Challenge has involved more than 3,500 young people at over 400 schools in 23 countries. Students identify one disposable-plastic habit, measure it, redesign the system around it and put the alternative into practice.

WHAT HAPPENED

The challenge is deliberately practical. School teams investigate how plastic moves through a familiar setting, choose a tractable target, build an alternative and measure what changes. The official program highlights student projects that replaced synthetic cleaning sponges with luffa, removed polyester from uniforms, swapped food film for banana leaves and introduced beeswax wraps that avoided roughly 400 rolls of plastic wrap.

A fresh profile followed students confronting thousands of disposable lunch items and learning that a campaign works better when it changes procurement, routines and default choices. The reported reach is cumulative across 11 editions. It is not proof that every intervention lasts forever, but it is a large, international demonstration of young people doing more than awareness work.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Plastic pollution is usually narrated at planetary scale, where the problem can feel too large for anyone to touch. These students work at the scale of a tray, a uniform, a sponge or a school rule—and then redesign the system that keeps buying it. One disposable at a time is not small when hundreds of schools repeat it.
