PHYSICISTS TRAPPED ONE PARTICLE OF ANTIMATTER FOR MONTHS.

A Northwestern-led team built a quantum cyclotron able to hold, cool and coherently control a single positron—the antimatter counterpart of an electron—for months.

WHAT HAPPENED

The experiment used electric and magnetic fields rather than material walls, which would annihilate the positron. The team demonstrated control of its quantum motion and a platform for future ultra-precise comparisons between matter and antimatter.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

Keeping one particle of antimatter under quantum control for months turns a notoriously fragile object into a reusable measuring instrument. The result opens a sharper route to testing the symmetries behind modern physics.
