Six hospitals changed everyday anesthesia practice, lowering estimated emissions and anesthetic spending without worsening tracked outcomes.

ONE HEALTH SYSTEM CUT ANESTHETIC EMISSIONS 45%—AND SPENDING NEARLY 40%.

A six-site health system reduced estimated anesthetic greenhouse-gas emissions per case by 45% and cut annual anesthetic spending nearly 40% after changing gas choices and delivery practices.

WHAT HAPPENED

Researchers reviewed 145,917 anesthetic episodes from January 2022 through October 2025 against a 2021 baseline. Average estimated emissions fell from 57.6 to 31.6 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per case. Spending dropped from $628,588 in 2021 to $379,010 in 2024, with no decline in measured safety or quality outcomes.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

This is operational climate progress with a double dividend: less pollution and lower cost from choices clinicians can make inside existing systems. The evidence is observational, but the scale makes the playbook worth attention.
