A MAJOR ALZHEIMER'S PREVENTION TRIAL HAS RANDOMIZED ITS FIRST PARTICIPANT.

The study will test whether clearing amyloid, then adding a second mechanism, can delay inherited Alzheimer's.

A MAJOR ALZHEIMER'S PREVENTION TRIAL HAS RANDOMIZED ITS FIRST PARTICIPANT.

The Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative's new autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's trial has assigned its first participant, moving a long-planned prevention strategy into randomized testing.

WHAT HAPPENED

Researchers will first use donanemab to remove amyloid plaque, then test nivagacetor alone, the combination, or placebo in members of a Colombian family carrying the PSEN1 E280A mutation. Carriers face near-certain early-onset Alzheimer's, making prevention studies possible years before symptoms.

WHY THIS IS HOPESLOP

There is no cure to celebrate here. The hope is the rigor: a high-risk community, a two-stage design, and the resources to ask whether intervening before dementia can actually change the disease's course.
